Hi, anybody out there with SPD kids ? My son aged 5 and 1/2 years has SPD. Therapy is going on from past 3 years. Is able to speak single words. Unable to join two words still. Understanding level is poor.

my 7 YO was diagnosed with SPD in July 2011.  He's been going to an OT 1 x wk (in addtn to other therapies) and it has already helped 75%!!!

Hey Everyone! I just stubled on this and it looks great. I don't often join communities etc. but I just might be needing advice from other parents of these unique yet great kids. My question tonight is for those whose children struggle with sensory issues. My son is 5 now and I thought he was actually improving in this, but suddenly he hates jeans, cords, the little gap teddy bear etc. He only wants to wear "soft" pants and shirts. Does anyone know if this tends to get worse with age instead of better? Thanks, Jeanne

One of our biggest struggles right now is with food. I read about so many SPD kids who have food avoidance issues...we seem to have the opposite. Our son is so overwhelmed in the kitchen and at mealtimes. It's almost like the power of suggestion takes over, and if he sees it, smells it, or even sees a suggestion of it, he HAS TO have it. This is really difficult when I am preparing meals. If I open the fridge to get something, he sees stuff in there and will go over and start pulling thingsnout and tearing into them. He has a huge fit when I try to stop or redirect him. He does this even if he is not hungry. He is four and I have to keep a lock on the fridge and a baby gate in our pantry ( which he breaks down).
Does anyone else experience this? I am at a loss.
Thanks!

1. THE CLOSET THING: My HoneyBoo is 9 yrs old with severe autism. a small closet place can work out wonderfully.(give it a chance mayB if you can make a space in yer home? i don' really know about YOU every kid and every house is different I just know it works ok 4 me so it is something 2 consider ) I have three children and one small closet n each of three bedrooms.the boys, HoneyBoo and Ace share a room, Baby Princess, my youngest daughter(2yr old) has a bedroom, and my husband and I share a br. each of the three bedrooms only have one small closet, and there r no other closets n our apartment so we already had space challenges to Bgin with. In me&daddy's room, daddy takes the closet. In the princess' room i hang up my clothes in the closet, and there's three dressers, one for each child. In the boy' s room we hang coats in that closet but it also doubles as HoneyBoo's special private area. we have some old couch cushions that just happned 2b almost same size as floor. he loves to go in there an sit in that small enclosed space and bounce around on those cushions or tear papers and line up the pieces or line up a bunch of toy cars and spin the wheels or sit uner a blanket and pretend or whatever he is doing.(trick is i have 2 check on him frequently as he will also stim and-or self injure on occasion, especially when hiding, but he makes vocal stims alot so i listen 4 certain soundpatterns) if you have a pantry or a small hall closet it could also work well.
2.THE WEIGHTED VEST: i too have looked n2 the possibilities of weighted vest and alo found them way too Xpen$ive. i am considering making a d.i.y.version after i study enough about them. NEbody try this? NE thots on this? the internet is my playground and i love to read but there seem 2 never b enough hours n the day 4 all the research and evrything else i must do and would like 2 do.
3. SUMMER BREAK: i feeel yer pain, well, i did. so gr8ful schoolstarted this week an i am sure that might sound horrible but part of HoneyBoo's routine that he enjoys and helps him thrive is the structured scheduled practically evrything @ school,(i even schedule his outside school therapies @ same day-time,always that makes me "difficult" lol) i was glad 2 c school start he seems happier and i do not have to give him mutiple bubble baths a day now, plus no more arguments and tantrums when junk mail comes as he is not home @ that time.
I hope that something I said might b able 2 help some1 and @ the same time it feels very good 2 share and not b totally alone on this jouney that is my crazy life.

I am looking for a weighted blanket.  I have found them on line but they are super expensive.

Does anyone know of a place to get them for cheap?

Does any one use a quiet place when the aggressive behavior gets out of hand? My O/T suggested the closet but i dont realy like that idea?

thanks for all your help

Thanks!
Do you know of good resources for helping regulate aggressive behavior at home? Summer's lack of structure has sent our little guy into a tailspin of hitting, biting, scratching, etc. Any good books out there for that kind of thing?

My son was diagnosed at the same age as yours, two years ago.  I write here for Hopeful Parents an am also an editor for the SPD blogger Network.  (http://www.spdbloggernetwork.com)  Look forward to connecting with you.
