We have triplets who are 11 and all on the spectrum.  2 boys and a girl.  We also have an older daughter who is 15.  One of the boys has a hearing loss too.  The road to here hasn't been easy but it has paid off.  They keep improving and are mainstreamed in school and doing well.  I am grateful. Looking forward to giving support and receiving some too.

@meredith...yeah, I know. We have had 3 advocates so far trying to fight the school. The problem is, the definition of FAPE is open to interpretation, and the school doesn't have to help her reach her full potential, just provide a somewhat adequate education. Since they don't have to provide typical students with a stellar education, our kids end up getting the short end of the stick. There's a problem with public education all around, unfortunately. My other issue is, our school district looks at inclusion like it's the holy grail, and will not admit that sometimes LRE is NOT in the gen ed classroom. We have an IEP in Oct...(really, I end up calling them every month). What we want, and what her doctors want, is half day self contained, half day gen ed. Not asking for much, but to the school it's like we're asking for a 100 grand/yr placement.

@Nikki - contact your local school board's Special Ed office and ask about starting the paperwork for CPSE (committee on preschool special education). They can set you up with therapists and an appropriate class for RJ, at no cost to you.

@Jess - you ARE a super mom. Even super moms are allowed to fall apart sometimes. This special needs parenting crap is hard.

@Jen - public schools in the US are required to provide all students with Free Appropriate Public Education. If they are not providing for your daughter's needs, you have the right to make the school pay for her to attend a private school or a public school in a nearby district that is better equipped. Don't take no for an answer!

Hi, I'm Jen, mom to Katie (7), who has an dx of Autism and Dyspraxia. She was first dx pdd-nos, but that was changed recently as the dr believes she fits all the criteria for classic Autism. She is very high-functioning, which is good and bad. Our main struggle is with a school system that doesn't seem to get how to deal with Autism in the general ed classroom. She has a lot of behavior issues that are getting worse with age, and we are working hard in and out of school with therapists trying to help her. I also have a 5yo son, who has some of his own issues, but nothing severe enough to warrant an eval/dx, in my opinion, yet.

I'm the mother of 4 beautiful, amazing children, ages 16, 14, 10 and 2.  My youngest son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS this past February. He is just shy of 3 years old now and I have been devoting every drop of energy that I can spare into his development, specifically into helping him communicate. The "Signing Times" videos have been such a blessing to us, as he now signs many of his wants/needs. I work very hard to stay positive, and am successful most days (I think) but I am SECRETLY a stressed out, exhausted, terrified, nervous wreck and am so afraid of missing this precious "window of opportunity" that the doctors and therapists so often speak of.  I am running as fast as I can, to do all that I can. To the outside world, I'm Supermom. They're sure I've got it all together and are amazed at my ability to stay so positve. But, the truth is, I'm falling apart from the inside out.... and that's why I'm here! ;-)

Hi my name is Nikki, my son RJ was diagnosised with PDD NOS in March of this year. I need some tips on how to get a message throw to him. Im doing the best I can but he's only want to be watching tv and is not a good eater. Im only 21 yrs old and I dont have a good idea what PDD NOS is. Im looking up as much infomation as I can. my question is i wounder is he going to grow out of it. I love him and except him the way he is but Im asking all this questions because I want to be the best parent that I can be for him. Dr also told me they think it would be best if he was home schooled....is that also true of can i put him in school???? I would like him to be in school cause I don't want to make him feel any different. The bad thing is that im not getting any type of classes for him to help me better understand what PDD NOS is so im trying to learn everything on my own. I dont mind ill do anything for him ♥

My son is 14 and He was diagnosed with Aspergers when He was 8 years old. It was a long, and very weary road to diagnosis, but the sun has come out and the days are looking sunny and bright for his future! I am so happy to have found this wonderful site to share with other parents the joys and the sorrows of raising a child with autism.
