where parents of kids with special needs connect

There are lots of people here, but I think we're all feeling kind of shy. I'll post a question of the day for a few days to see if it sparks anyone to join the conversation -- or maybe even start one of their own!

So...the question for today is...

Where do you like to vacation?

Ha, vacation, whats that???

Seriously, we haven't gone on a vacation as a family in a very long time, and I shudder to think of the coordination that would be required now. For me a vacation is curling up with a good book on my couch.
The Beach...if we can ever get there~
This year we took an eight day road trip to Salt Lake City, UT. With one special needs kid and two toddlers it took a lot of advanced prep and sheer courage to do it, but we pulled it off. We took two days driving there, spent four days with my extended family doing kid friendly things and hanging out at our hotel swimming pool, then two days driving back stopping in Reno to visit friends on their little petting zoo/farm. The only problem was that we all got sick with various viruses/infections and were still sick when we got back. My hubby says Montana next year - so add two days to the trip. Hmmm...
This question came when I was...on vacation! I used to travel a lot for work to Europe. That was great, but I'd have a hard time considering it vacation. What I love is where we were last week - a little resort area in the north of my state. It's not resort as in "please lay your cash here before entering," but more in a natural and quaint way. We spent many hours at the beach, which appeals to both of my daughters, some hiking (Addie bore it with grace this year), kayaking, biking, ferry-riding, mini-golfing and tons of eating. I just love it. We stay in a cottage with just our few things in it - the neatness and lack of chaos of home really appeals. The cottage is owned by a family with small children, so we have toys, movies, plenty of room, etc. I love this week's worth of pause...

For the first time in 10 years, we probably will not be able to do it in 2010. So sad. But we have a number of conferences in the spring that we attend as a family, a grant project due at the same time, and a national conference for my daughter's diagnosis in July. Ugh. No peace in 2010, I'm afraid.
We went to Disney World for the first time this year. I had no idea how much I would love it!! I expected the kids to, but I didn't realize how wonderful it would be for our family. It was the perfect vacation - our every need was anticipated and taken care of right away. It is all structured and very clear what the "rules" are in a very friendly way - this was perfect for my spirited boys who need that in their day to be successful. Our son with complex needs didn't have a melt down at all while at Disney. He relaxed which meant I was able to relax. I dream everyday of going back.
vacation... what's that! Before I had kids my favourite vacation destination was San Francisco or Southeast Asia - loas, Vietnam - now I am lucky of we make it to the coast to visit the family
My hubby and I were a camping couple before we had our daughter. No vacations really since she has been born (she will be 3 next week!), but maybe next summer we will try to do some camping... if we are brave enough!
