Hopeful Parents Community

where parents of kids with special needs connect

Hi I am Melissa A 34 yr old mom to 5. my oldest is 16 my youngest 15months. 4 boys, 1 girl. My 4yr son Matthew  was diagnoised as being "high functioning " Autism.  It has been really hard taking it all in. so much to think about and do different, what makes this so much harder is that his father, my husband is in complete denial. according to him nothing is wrong with our son, he is just a little shy and has tatrums like every child does at some point in time.this makes it hard when I am trying to get him speech therapy aba and all other sorts of things. he wants nothing to do with the process at all. This gropu will e so helpful to me as I read posts and become hopeful and know that I am not alone in this lifelong journey. I have always thought to myself that having a child with Autism is a blessing from God, that he puts that much faith and trust in me to care for my special needs child, cause we all know how draining it can be. It has also changed my life in ways never imagined. I see things so much differently, and take time in the "little things". Thank you all so much for sharing your stories and thoughts, it has help me so much..     ~Melissa~

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that your husband is in denial. I pray that he "snaps out of it" and comes to support you and your family in the most amazing ways!

It really touched me about what you said, that autism is a blessing from God. My daughter has PDD-NOS and ADHD (just found out), and I never thought about it that way. I know that God doesn't give us more than we can handle, but I need to be looking at it from that perspective too. That He puts the faith and trust in us to raise this beautiful girl. I'm going to share that with my husband. I know he isn't in denial, but I also know that he is struggling a little with this. We have been through so much over the last couple of years, and sometimes we forget about the little things too. Thank you so much for the reminder!!
