Hopeful Parents Community

where parents of kids with special needs connect

Hello,

I am the mom of a 10 year old boy with Pelizaeus merzbacher disease.  This is a rare central nervous system disorder.  This disease has taken so much from my son, including the ability to play at a typical playground.  My husband and I formed a non profit that focuses on building accessible playgrounds.

We opened up Zachary's Playground in Lake St. Louis Mo back in 2007.  It has been such a great place for Zach to interact and play with his friends.  It has also provided a great opportunity for the other children to realize that Zach is just like they are, it's just that his body is different.

Here is a link to our video Zachary's Playground  It tells our story and shows why these playgrounds are so important.

We are currently part of the Pepsi refresh project.  We are competing in the $50,000 category to help raise funds for a new playground in O'Fallon MO.  Please vote for us!

The chance to play on a playground seems like such a little thing, but as you all know, when your days are spent with doctors, therapist, and other adults, the chance to forget for a few moments the difficulties and play just like everyone else is priceless.

I am also always looking for feedback on what you would like to see incoorporated into playgrounds.  We are looking for new ideas, for things you have used and really like, and also things that are not good and should be changed.

Thanks!

This is truly inspiring!! Here in my hometown of Columbus Ohio, there was a park opened called "The Miracle Playground".It's just outside of Columbus actually, in Dublin. It's an amazing place for kids with special needs to play!! When read this I was so happy to see others around the Country making this happen! I'm going to share you on my blog!! Hopefully send some donations your way :)

Sincerely,

Stephanie Laura Murray

Thanks Stephanie!  One of our biggest struggles is just getting the information out that playgrounds can be built to include everyone.  I appreciate you adding the information to your blog.
